Medical Conditions at School

Managing Medicines at Bempton School

ADMINISTERING PRESCRIBED MEDICINES

We can only accept medicines that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist, nurse prescriber or pharmacist prescriber.  Medicines should always be in the original container as dispensed and include the prescribers instructions for administration.  We are not able to accept medicines that have been taken out of the container as originally dispensed or make changes to dosages on parental instructions.

NON PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES

Non-prescription medicines can not be administered by school.

PARACETAMOL ORAL SUSPENSION

Please be aware that we can only accept paracetamol oral suspension in 5ml sachets (if the dose required is 7.5ml, parents must provide an oral syringe or a 2.5ml spoon).  The correct number of sachets should be brought in to school on the day they are required, in a sealed envelope clearly stating the pupil's name, class and date.  We are no longer able to accept paracetamol oral suspension in bottles or to keep large amounts in school.

A consent form must be completed at all times giving permission for school staff to administer medicines. This form can be found at the bottom of this page in pdf format.

Individual Healthcare Plan

The purpose of an individual healthcare plan for a child with medical needs is to identify and clarify the level of support that is needed.  Not all children who have medical needs will require an individual plan. If you think your child may need an individual healthcare plan please speak to a member of staff.

Infection Control and Recommended Absence from School

Rashes and Skin Infections

Children with rashes should be considered infectious and assessed by their doctor in the first instance.

Diarrhoea and Vomiting

If your child has sickness and diarrhoea we recommend a period of 48 hours absence from school from the last episode.  For sickness only, with no other symptoms present, children can return to school 24 hours after the last episode.

Headlice

Children do not usually need to be taken out of school for treatment as some treatments are best done overnight. If children are taken out of school we recommend using a product that requires a shorter contact time (available via the Pharmacy Care Scheme).  Treatment should take no longer than two hours, once treated children must return to school. An absence from school for head lice longer than two hours will not be authorised.

If you are in any doubt about whether to keep your child away from school due to illness or suspected infections please contact the school.
